Beginning University Employment

Congratulations on your new job at Penn State! There are a variety of things you will need to know as you start your employment. If you need additional information, you should contact your Human Resources Representative.

Benefits for Full-Time Faculty and Staff

Penn State offers numerous benefits for full time faculty and staff including:

Coverage for your benefits becomes effective on your date of hire, as long as you have completed the necessary enrollment forms no later than 31 days from your date of employment.

New Employee Orientation

The Human Resource Development Center offers a new employee orientation program for all new full-time employees. The program provides an overview of the Penn State structure, and will give you the opportunity to explore and practice core Penn State values of customer service, continuous improvement, and diversity. In addition, you will gain insights to assist in the selection of a benefits package that is tailored to your personal needs.

Parking

At a place as big as Penn State—where there are thousands of students, visitors, faculty, and staff and a limited number of parking spaces—sometimes parking can be challenging. Faculty and staff, who wish to park a vehicle on campus, must obtain a parking permit through their department. A parking permit or transponder will be issued for a specific parking area. Faculty and staff are required to park their vehicles in the areas to which they have been assigned. If the assigned lot is not available, for any reason, please proceed to the nearest orange (open staff) or commuter lot. Signs are posted at the entrance to each parking area identifying the area and specifying the reserved hours. Information on parking permits, bus and shuttle services, and event paring can be found on the transportation services website.

Payroll

The Payroll department is responsible for processing payroll payments and withholdings for all employees. In addition, the payroll component of ESSIC provides you access to a copy of your pay check, W-4, direct deposit information, year-to-date tax and W-2 information. Some of this information can be updated directly through the website, including election not to receive a paper copy of your paystub.

Probationary Period for Staff Employees

When you begin employment in a standing or fixed-term I staff appointment, you are considered a probationary employee. During the probationary period, you will not be able to use the staff general grievance procedure, and your employment may be terminated without recourse to the procedure.

The probationary period starts on your first day of employment and lasts for 12 consecutive months.

For more information please see HR 34: Employment Conditions for Staff Employees

Policies affecting employees represented by a union are found in the appropriate Agreements.
