Penn State’s comprehensive medical plan is designed to provide quality, affordable, and accessible health care coverage for University employees and their family members. Employees have access to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Network, the nation’s largest health care network.
Penn State’s disability benefits provide up to 60% of salary with total benefits.
All full-time employees receive a $50,000* Prudential life insurance policy at no cost. Additional coverage may be purchased each year during the annual open enrollment without proof of good health or at any other time of the year by providing proof of good health. Dependent Life Insurance coverage is also available for purchase.
*For members of the Teamsters Local 8 bargaining unit, existing policy HR 54 will govern their negotiated life insurance program.
Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance
Penn State’s Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance covers Penn State employees both on and off the job, anywhere in the world.
Penn State offers two premier retirement options to all full-time employees. TIAA-CREF and the State Employees’ Retirement System. In addition, Penn State offers variety of different supplemental retirement plans including, 403(b) and 457(b), offered through TIAA-CREF.
Vacation & Paid Holidays
Most full-time staff employees annually earn between 18 and 24 vacation days plus 12 paid holidays per year, allowing you to enjoy life as you please.
Nobody wants to be sick. But if you should feel under the weather, Penn State’s sick leave allows you time to recover. Staff employees accumulate one sick day each month with no designated maximum. Currently, many of our long-term employees have well over 200 available sick days.

Penn State provides on-site child care at six campus locations. The University’s Work/Life office also provides additional child care resources and guides, including an annual guide to summer programs for school-age children.

Flexible Spending Accounts
You can voluntarily choose to participate in a Health Care Reimbursement Account and/or a Dependent Care Reimbursement Account. Flexible spending accounts offer the advantage of increasing your take-home pay while also reimbursing you for your out-of-pocket health care or dependent care expenses. Pay for select medical and/or child care expenses on a pre-tax basis.
